7th Grade Social Studies

The seventh graders finished their unit on the Byzantium Empire right before the December break. They worked on research skills to investigate Byzantine icons and wrote an expository essay on icons.
In January the seventh graders began a unit on Islam. We are concentrating on the geography of the Arabian Peninsula, the history and the spread of Islam, the contribution of Muslims to world civilization, current events in the Middle East, as well as making comparisons of the three major religions: Islam, Christianity and Judaism.
Our students are also reading or have read Seven Daughters and Seven Sons to integrate Language Arts with the Social Studies Curriculum. We are focusing on active reading strategies, to become better readers, using both fiction and non-fiction text.
